The Importance of a Funeral Plan
Although it is very difficult to think about and can be very upsetting to consider, it is critical that you have a funeral plan.  Many people go through their lives with their families not expecting to have to deal with this most unpleasant topic.  However, putting off making these plans is not a wise idea.  Unfortunately, as much as human beings think that they control everything, they do not.  Accidents, illness and death do happen and it is best to be prepared in the unlikely event of a tragedy.  If you do not make a plan for your death or your funeral, your family will be left to pick up the pieces and to deal with the logistical and financial details of your passing while they are already enduing a tremendous amount of grief and sorrow. This is an unfair burden to put on them and will make the business of dealing with your death that much more difficult to bear.

When one hears the phrase "funeral plan," various things come to mind.  To create a viable plan for your passing and your situation, it is critical to talk with your family about the realities of your situation.  A plan for a death or a funeral will mean different things to every family.  For many people the plan means purchasing a funeral insurance package or some other financial benefits arrangement so that the monetary burden of paying for your funeral does not fall on your grieving family.  For some families funeral arrangements will be straightforward and traditional.  For others, the plans are unique and may involve travel, various sorts of religious ceremonies or the gathering of a large group of family and friends.  These things should be discussed and prepared for ahead of time, so that when the time does come, the details have already been taken care of, and everything can proceed as smoothly as possible.

There are other elements of a person's passing that should be discussed as well.  What sort of ceremony do you want? Do you want a traditional burial or would you prefer to be cremated?  Who in your family will handle all of these arrangements and who will take care of your family after you are gone?  All of these issues, though upsetting and worrisome to think about should be addressed as soon as possible especially if there are children to consider.  Although the idea of making a funeral plan may be terrifying to you, you will feel much better when it is finished and you can rest assured knowing that all of the major details of your passing have been considered, and that your family will be prepared when the time comes.

Insurance companies can often help you plan for the inevitability of a funeral for either you or your significant other.  There are special packages devoted to funerals, life insurance, burial plans and other issues.  The sooner that you deal with this the better off you and your family will be. This conversation can be very difficult and meandering, so it is a good idea to sit down with an insurance professional that is trained to deal with all of the questions that you and your family will undoubtedly have in the face of very difficult issue.  If you do not yet have a family or a significant other who you rely on to take care of the details of this major event, an insurance company can help you develop a funeral plan that will take care of the essentials and make it easy for the extended family and friends that you do have to get through this tragedy with the least amount of difficulty.
